I started week 5 by modelling some odd bits off food for my scene. For reference I typically looked at some vegan restaurants in America such as The Green Grill that specialise in weird coloured food.
I also looked at a few Halloween desserts which inspired the eyeball donuts.
I wanted the food to look normal at a glance but if you looked closer you'd be able to tell it looks off.
I also had advise from Dominic Shaw with some minor changes that helped push the scene further. One was to change the glasses to milkshake glasses and cola bottles, as it added more interested and helps associate the scene with a 50's American diner.
Along with these I made some cutlery and napkins to make the diner feel more genuine.
I also added a decal for the inside of the drinks to look like they we recently drank out of.
I also took the time to texture the cash register in a lot more detail.
After seeing a diner first hand I noticed they had a lot of boxes lying around at one end ready to be sorted and put away. I thought this would be a nice prop which I can use around the scene to help add some variation and story telling to the scene.
I also remade the newspaper properly which I made in Marvellous Designer to help create more convincing folds and creases.
I wanted to make a telephone from the start and decided I wouldn't have enough time but I found I did have time this week to make one.
Added frames to some of the posters:
I also researched blinds from that period and recreated metal Venetian blinds which were popular aside from roller blinds in the 50's.
The last thing to do was to add decals, there was a lot of cracked tiles in the diner I went to which I thought would be great to add. I made them in painter using cells and masking out parts I didn't want. I also added chips, scrapes and screws here and there to add wear and tear.
Nick Cooper, a friend of mine helped with the music side if my project. He wrote and recorded his own music which was inspired by music from the 50's.
I also used this recording for the video sequence I used. I followed this tutorial to learn how to make a fly through sequence.
