Professional Brief Test (Playground Games): Week 2

Day 6-7:

I spent the first couple of days texturing fruit. I discovered that making the highpoly textures for these was a bad idea and I should have just added them in when texturing as I made life difficult for myself (especially for the kiwi). These versions of the fruit will be uses for the baking process for planes and not the fruit that will be showcased on the top so I don't mind too much that they don't look 'perfect' as they will be very small and distant from the viewer.
I saved each fruit material as a Smart Material In Painter so when it comes to the showcased fruit I will already have textures ready for them that I can tweak appropriately.

Next I need to finish off the boxes so I can work out how to do these planes and I will start working on a wood texture in Designer for the cart.

Day 8:

For the wood I wanted it to be quite basic as I will paint in the wear and details in Painter so I can have more control over it. I also exposed the disorder and size of the wood pattern so I can change and vary it as I go in Painter so I can have more control over how it looks.

Day 9-10:

Boxes
I started making the low poly of the boxes and noticed the one box is very confusing to the eye as it is a cardboard box with a wood pattern printed on. I think it's best I either go for cardboard or wood for this box so it's more readable as an asset. I am thinking of going for cardboard as I already have a wood box and the cardboard adds a nice contrast.
I managed to get the low poly for this to 192 tris. I want to try and get it a bit lower if possible but I need to move on  as I want to aim to get all the boxes done by the end of the week.
This was baked onto a plane of 74 tris. Depending on budget I may include the backface to the box but I doubt I will have the tris to spare so for now I will leave it as it is.
160 tris.

For the box with holes I created a highpoly with the holes which i baked down and used this to mask off those holes too in painter. I also used a plane behind the holes to help fake the depth in the box.
I will need to mess with that plane a bit as it's a bit close which gives the game away.
14 tris.

The boxes all came to 440 tris! That means I have 4,560 left for the fruit and baskets.

Baskets

To know how to model the baskets I needed to know how the material would work on them first. I had a look at Peter Sekula's method of making a wicker texture to get an idea of how he went about it.
I also made a version without the straw in between that I could use to manipulate for the top edge of the baskets.
This was a test to see if the material works. The basket is currently at 72 tris, I don't think I can get it much lower without the geometry looking too harsh. I will need 10 baskets roughly although one is underneath the others and I may be able the delete parts of it.
Both baskets and boxes came to 1,160 tris giving me around 3.840 tris to play with, so I'll have to see what I can do as the fruit are mainly spheres! There are probably bits of geometry that's hidden and can be deleted when on the cart too and when covered by fruit which will give me a few extra here and there.

Test bake:
I tested baking the wood of the cart in both Painter and Marmoset and decided that Marmoset is the way to go as you can paint in offset and skew to help fix errors in the bake. As this will be quite a complicated bake It will definitely be useful.
Substance Painter
The wheels at certain angles are obviously angular so I hope I can add some spare geometry into them if I have some.
